DYB Choisun Language Institute

DYB Choisun Language Institute is an education institution in South Korea that teaches elementary to high school students all aspects of the English language. The institute has been established for over thirty years and is known for its intensive courses based on TOEFL/KSAT that include reading, writing, speaking, and listening, with instruction from both Korean and native English speakers.

Problem: Students enrolled in the institute found the lessons monotonous and did not see the value of the English language in society. Rather than learning, students would memorize necessary English for the assigned day, and not continue to apply the skills for later. Lessons in English did not have a connection to real-world applications for students to see the importance and joy of using another language.

Insight: South Korean students live in a homogenous society - many times, aspects from a foreign country are unfamiliar and new to these students. Additionally, it was crucial to be respectful of the Korean culture, and step back and realize that there are differences that need to be embraced. Introducing new concepts to students required strategic implementation.

Task: Create challenging lessons that provide more than just memorizing practices for English. Rather, create meaningful and memorable lessons where students learn skills, learn a new aspect of foreign culture, and see that English is more than an exam. Lessons included historical analysis, real-world related scenarios, and ways to apply the lesson in students’ lives.

Result: Students were able to learn about real-world issues, understand and comprehend worldwide news, gently stepping into a global community — gaining cultural skills and finding new ways to solve problems.
